The festival for independent filmmakers focuses on movies about the weird, the supernatural, the paranormal and the unexplained – with its title ‘Fortean’ hailing from Charles Fort, a researcher of anomalous phenomena.

After making its debut on the big screen last month at the town’s Ice House on Bridge Road, there was double delight for The Creature from Scroby Sands filmmakers.

The horror comedy was named Best Comedy and won Best Trailer in the 2025 instalment of the wacky and wonderful film festival.

Produced by childhood friends Jordon Thomas Sendall, Kyle Ball and James Weeds, the film tells the story of four teenagers who visit the seaside town for a holiday but soon come face to face with a demon from the depths as they are targeted by a mythical sea monster.

Success at the film festival comes after 200 people enjoyed a red carpet premiere at the Ice House.

For the film’s producers, On The Huh Productions, nostalgia was hugely influential.

After starting development in 2021 the production took almost five years, as the movie morphed from an initial concept of a short film to a feature-length love letter to the Norfolk coast, its locals and its visitors.

Art director Kyle Ball said: “It has been amazing to be part of this fantastic project, and it is so humbling to receive positive responses from audiences at home and across the country.”

Writer James Weeds said: “We wanted to write a love letter to Yarmouth.”

Director and editor Jordon Thomas Sendall said it was a “passion project”, adding he is keen to continue filmmaking.

‘Absolutely fantastic’

The premiere event at The Ice House in Yarmouth raised money for Caister Lifeboat and FAITH Animal Rescue.

The historic building, located at the Southtown end of Haven Bridge, was a key asset in the town’s fishing industry.

Since opening in May this year, after a £3m transformation, the Ice House has been repurposed into an arts and heritage hub led by Out There Arts.

Out There’s Marcin Rodwell said: “Collaborating with On the Huh Productions has been a treat and really shows that Great Yarmouth is a place full of creatives.”

The guest of honour for the premiere was Great Yarmouth mayor Carl Annison.

He said: “It’s been fantastic to see this production – it’s bringing people into Great Yarmouth, which is what we want.

“I thought the film was absolutely fantastic.

“Congratulations to all involved.”

The producers are looking at other venues to screen The Creature from Scroby Sands.
