A pedestrian has reportedly been “hit by a tram” in Edinburgh, prompting a huge emergency response.

The alarm was raised at around 1.30pm on Friday, November 7 when emergency services including police, fire crews, and paramedics raced to Constitution Street following reports of someone having been struck by the vehicle.

The BBC said the individual was hit by the vehicle, with EdinburghLive adding unconfirmed local reports suggested they were ‘trapped’ near the stop at The Shore.

Police Scotland confirmed a 66-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh following the incident. The force said it was related to “concern for a person”.

The extent of the man’s injuries and his current condition in hospital is not yet known.

Trams were unable to serve the busy Leith street in while emergency crews got to work.

The whole area was placed on lockdown for around two hours this afternoon following the sad incident.

An air ambulance was spotted landing in Leith Links at around 2.30pm.

It then headed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and landed just before 3pm.

Tram services were suspended for about two hours before the road was reopened shortly after 3pm.

Edinburgh Trams said their services were on a part route due to a “medical incident”.

A spokesperson also told the BBC staff had supported emergency responders at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Constitution Street has re-opened following a report of concern for a person received around 1.35pm on Friday, 7 November.

“Emergency services attended and a 66-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

“The public are thanked for their patience.”

Edinburgh Trams added: “Due to a medical emergency, we are running part route between the Airport and Balfour Street.

“Trams are part route between Airport and Balfour street due to an incident at the shore tram stop. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.37pm on Friday, 7 November to assist emergency service partners on Constitution Street, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances and a specialist resource to the scene. Crews left at 3.10pm.”
