In over 50 years observing the British monarchy, I have never seen such hostility – even loathing – of the royal family as I’ve witnessed over the past few weeks. You can just feel the vibe. The shaming and banishment from public life of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor – formerly Prince Andrew – has been unanimously cheered.

BBC audiences burst into enthusiastic applause at news of his downfall, and callers to broadcast phone-ins have been vicious about him and, by association, the royals.
