There’s an ancient, evil, dinosaur-filled temple lurking in the bowels of central Edinburgh.
No, really. If you head to Fountain Park, bypass the cinema and descend the stairs, you’ll find yourself in Volcano Falls: an impressive indoor adventure golf course.
A Prehistoric Putting Paradise
Adventure golf, what many of us grew up calling “crazy golf”, is a game of wonderfully frustrating fun.
The goal is simple: use your putter to get the ball in the hole, just a few metres away. The challenge comes from the deliberately “curvy and swervy” courses, tunnels, and jumps designed to send your ball rolling off at dramatic angles.
Volcano Falls commits absolutely to its theme. This is an atmospherically lit, wonderfully decorated subterranean chamber. You’ll be putting around fanged skulls, dodging dinosaur feet, and navigating obstacles, all while animatronic dinosaurs roar and watch over the proceedings.
It’s honestly a hidden secret in Edinburgh. That’s a phrase I try to avoid, but I do think it applies here! Whether you’re looking for something to do with the kids during the holidays or a quirky date-night idea, it’s a brilliant, immersive escape from the norm.
Crowds, Queues, and Accessibility
Be warned, it can get a little busy, and this does impact play. You often find yourself waiting for the group ahead to finish a hole or for them to give up after hitting their maximum number of shots.
This sometimes leads to bottlenecks, especially when a wee toddler is desperately trying to get the golf ball through the evil-looking skull. While the atmosphere is great (there’s food, music, and the rest of Fountain Park is just upstairs), those who dislike crowds might want to aim for a quieter, off-peak visit.
The biggest caveat, however, is accessibility. As someone who used to walk with a stick, I watch for this, and I think even getting down the stairs would be a bit of a drama. This is a lot of time on your feet, and is not recommended for anyone with mobility issues, wheelchair users, or even those with walking sticks.
Overall
Volcano Falls is a bit quirky, a bit different, and a whole lot of fun. Despite the potential for crowds and significant accessibility issues, it delivers a wonderfully themed and enjoyably frustrating experience. A roaring good time.
