Public trust in Scotland’s largest local authority has plummeted with just one-third of Glaswegians saying they have faith in the SNP-run council to run the city.

An annual household survey among residents found just 15 per cent were satisfied with roads maintenance and 40 per cent were content with the level of street cleaning.

But the dip from 35 per cent to 33 per cent among Glaswegians who say they trust the council will be causing the biggest headaches for senior staff in George Square.

It comes as the city continues to struggle with a growing homelessness crisis partly caused by a huge rise in asylum seekers travelling to Glasgow to take advantage of Scotland’s more liberal laws on providing emergency accommodation.

The Record previously revealed how the crisis-hit local authority also confirmed a near 260 per cent rise in refugees being placed in hotels and bed and breakfasts.

The surge led SNP council leader Susan Aitken to warn the Home Office that Glasgow is at “breaking point”.

Glasgow City Council is also facing a £66m funding black hole after a rise in spending on temporary accommodation for refugees.

Councillor Eunis Jassemi, Scottish Labour candidate for Glasgow Anniesland, said: “These figures paint a bleak picture of a city being let down by SNP mismanagement.

“Glaswegians are losing faith because they see the reality every day — dirty streets, crumbling roads, struggling schools, and parks that have fallen into neglect.

“For years, the SNP has talked about renewal while cutting the very services that make Glasgow work. It’s no wonder trust in this administration has dropped again. Labour believes Glasgow deserves better — services that work, communities that are listened to, and leadership that takes responsibility instead of making excuses.

“That’s what I’ll continue to fight for: a city that’s clean, safe and fair for every community.”

An SNP spokesman said: “The SNP City Administration listens to our communities who have opportunities like the household survey to tell us what they think.

“That’s why when we’ve had money to invest, we’ve put an extra £7million into cleansing and parks and a further £20 into roads. Communities are now seeing the benefits of that investment and we hope that’s reflected in next year’s survey.

“In the past couple of days it’s emerged that Labour’s London bosses have stripped even more millions of pounds out of Glasgow. If we had that and the tens of millions Labour’s equal pay bill is costing the city every year to spend on services, Glaswegians would be a lot more satisfied.”

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Glasgow is one of very few authorities across Scotland to carry out this kind of gold-standard household research, which is absolutely intended to challenge the council and its services.

“The most recent survey shows a mixed response to many services, which the experts who carry out fieldwork and analysis told elected members reflects trends across the United Kingdome – with satisfaction levels falling, nationally, since 2019.

“The council values the feedback from citizens and it is important officials and elected members understand their views as they make decisions.

“It should be noted that interviews for this year’s survey began a little more than a month into the new financial year, so it is not realistic to imagine the impact of new investment in frontline services would have been visible to citizens at this point.”
