Lawyers have confirmed they are suing a Scots bus company after five people were taken to hospital following a horror double decker smash.

All 11 passengers on board a Lothian bus had to be treated by paramedics when it crashed in a telecoms mast in Edinburgh on November 3.

The dramatic event unfolded on Calder Road in the Sighthill area of the city at around 11.15am, with emergency services racing to the scene.

Photos of the aftermath of the smash show the bus ground to a halt at the side of the road with extensive damage to the front of the vehicle.

And now Thompsons Solicitors has confirmed it is launching legal action on behalf of some of the injured passengers.

Patrick McGuire, a leading partner with the firm, said: “Having dealt with many bus accidents in the past I know that the passengers involved in last Monday’s accident will really have been through the mill.

“It’s clear that the bus operator is liable for this accident and the injuries suffered by their passengers.

“I’ve already had initial contact with several of those on board the bus and we’re moving ahead with legal action as soon as possible.

“The law is very clear here, Lothian buses have failed in their duty to transport their passengers safely to their destination and I’ll make sure that those injured get the full compensation they are due.”

Both the front windscreen and the top front window of the double decker bus were left smashed following the collision, with the right side of the vehicle left caved in.

Police Scotland confirmed five of the 11 passengers were checked at the scene by ambulance crews and several more were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for assessment.

A statement said: “The driver was not injured. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Lothian buses said it was “fully assisting Police Scotland with their enquiries.”

Thompsons said Patrick and his team have worked on other significant bus crash cases in recent years.

Last December they represented passengers injured in accidents in both Glasgow and Kilmarnock, securing substantial damages for those injured.

In one of those cases the upper deck a double decker was sheared off after attempting to pass under a low bridge.

In 2018, the firm secured compensation for passengers severely injured when a bus overturned on a dual carriage way in Glasgow.

The Record has approached Lothian buses for comment.
