POPPIES were pinned proudly to chests as Silhillians bowed their heads in respectful silence to remember the fallen.

A service was held outside St Alphege Church in Solihull to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

A two-minute silence was held while people reflected and remembered those lost in battle.

Solihull’s Mayor, Councillor Annette Mackenzie, laid a wreath at the St Alphege memorial alongside other dignitaries and organisations.

The Mayor of Solihull, said: “On Remembrance Sunday we paused as a community to honour the courageous men and women who sacrificed everything to protect our nation.

“As Mayor of Solihull, I was honoured to stand alongside the veterans, families and residents who were paying tribute to those who gave everything for our freedom, and whose bravery and sacrifice we must not forget.”

Also present at the service were members of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides, Cubs and Beavers, and veterans.

Solihull West and Shirley MP, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, and Meriden and Solihull East MP, Saiqb Bhatti were among those to lay a wreath at the town’s war memorial.

Dr Shastri-Hurst said: “On this Remembrance Sunday, we honour all who gave their lives in service to our country.

“We will remember them.”

Mr Bhatti said: “We gathered to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It was moving to see Solihull turn out in droves for this morning’s service, young and old, to remember the fallen.

“We will remember them.”
