A restaurant has been broken into this week on a busy Cardiff street where traders have told us they are worried about crime rates. On Monday, November 10, Hudo Lounge – part of the Loungers chain – was the latest establishment to be a victim of burglary on Cowbridge Road East in Canton.
The road which is busy with shoppers has faced issues with public drinking, crime, disorderly behaviour and daily thefts, so much so that UK home secretary Yvette Cooper took to the street to speak to traders about the problems they face in August.
The road in Canton is lined with shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and residential properties with many people there claiming to have come into contact with some sort of crime. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here
During the early hours of Monday morning Hudo had its window smashed and the till was also stolen. Pictures shared showed the window boarded up.
South Wales Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with any information to come forward. They also asked businesses to review their security systems and make it clear that there is no cash on the premises overnight.
A spokesperson for the force said: “South Wales Police is investigating a burglary at The Hudo Lounge, Cowbridge Road East, during the early hours of yesterday (Monday, November 10).
“A ground floor window was smashed and the till was stolen. We recognise that being a victim of burglary is traumatic, whether it’s your home, business, or workplace.
“Anyone with information or CCTV footage is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting 2500358243.”
They added: “If anyone is seen acting suspiciously, please call police immediately on 999. As always, we ask business to review their security systems and make it clear that there is no cash on the premises overnight.
“We also ask people to be vigilant of anyone seen hanging around businesses or retail premises during the early hours of the morning.”
When WalesOnline visited the street on Wednesday, August 13, one trader told us that any improvement made over the last few months had “fallen off a cliff” while three more traders reported “daily” thefts and one reported people urinating on their shop front.
Yagub Jollah works at hair and skincare store Jah Beauty. He said he hopes that offices patrolling the area will deter thieves – something he deals with every single day.
He told: “You have a lot of anti-social behaviour around here, people causing trouble, and I think this will help. We have shoplifters and people arguing and fighting in the street – those kinds of things. We have quite a lot of issues with shoplifting. It’s happening on a daily basis.
“I think police patrolling the area would help quite a lot – especially to deter people. Because when someone tries to start trouble they might turn around and see a police officer and then think twice about doing so.”
