Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing Timothy Fosu-Mensah as they await EFL approval on potential free agent signings, as per The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday are dealing with a threadbare squad after a disastrous summer. Their financial struggles prompted registration embargoes, limiting them to the loan signings of only Harry Amass and Ethan Horvath.

However, following administration and the ousting of Dejphon Chansiri, SWFC have been working with the EFL to try and earn clearance for some free agent additions.

Now, according to The Star, one man on the Sheffield Wednesday transfer radar is Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

They report that Henrik Pedersen and the Owls have drawn up a list of potential free agent targets in the event the EFL approve some out-of-window signings. And, while no indication of a definitive outcome has emerged yet, Fosu-Mensah is one player to have been shortlisted by SWFC.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah out of the game a long time amid Sheffield Wednesday interest

Fosu-Mensah’s name is likely one that Sheffield Wednesday fans are familiar with. After starting out in the Ajax academy, the Dutchman joined Manchester United’s youngsters in 2014.

He would go on to make his senior breakthrough with the Red Devils. Fosu-Mensah found experience out on loan with Crystal Palace and Fulham but also played 30 matches for Manchester United.

The 27-year-old would eventually leave Old Trafford permanently, moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. Fosu-Mensah played a fringe role there, only appearing 30 times over three years, but he still has a Bundesliga title and a DfB Pokal to his name.

The Sheffield Wednesday free agent target left Leverkusen in 2024. He has spent time training back with Ajax since then, but he may require time to get up to match sharpness before coming to the fore at his next club.

An ideal profile for Sheffield Wednesday?

The fact Fosu-Mensah will likely take time to get up to speed isn’t ideal for Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the physicality and versatility he brings could be of huge value for the Owls. The three-time Dutch international has played all over the pitch during his career, be it as a full-back, centre-back, defensive midfielder or at wing-back.

His ability to play in numerous roles when SWFC are so short in depth could be key in deciding whether they make a move or not. Ultimately, the Owls may have to assess just where he is with his fitness before making an offer though.

If they pass up the chance to sign Fosu-Mensah, Wednesday will be sure to have alternative options lined up as they look to the free agents market.
