Rafael only spoke to confirm his name but was not asked to enter pleas to the charges.

Judge Simon Drew KC set a trial date for May 5 next year with the case expected to take between two to three weeks.

No bail application was made on behalf of the defendant, who was remanded in custody. A further hearing was scheduled for January 16.

West Midlands Police previously said it wanted to hear from anyone who knew more about what happened or the movements of Rafael, who it described as a black British national.

It was believed he was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack on Friday evening, according to the force.

Following the incident the force confirmed the victim was taken to hospital with a serious neck injury but later died.
