The 2025 edition of Clarivate Analytics’ Highly Cited Researchers ( HCR ) list includes seven researchers from the University of Barcelona among the most influential in the world. This confirms that the UB is once again the university in Spain with the highest number of researchers with a high international scientific impact in different fields of study.

The HCR ranking is one of the most distinguished in the international academic and scientific community. It includes the 6,868 most relevant researchers in the world across 20 fields of science and social sciences, ranging from clinical medicine and neuroscience to agriculture, economics and the environment. These scientists are part of more than 1,300 institutions in 61 countries and may appear in several specific fields or in the cross-field category, which includes those who have had a substantial influence in several fields over the last decade.

In terms of countries, the United States ranks first, with 2,669 researchers. It is followed by China, with 1,408, and the United Kingdom, with 570. Rounding out the top five are Germany, with 363, and Australia, with 311. Spain has 94 researchers on this list. Once again, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the Spanish institution with the most influential researchers (12), while the UB leads among Spanish universities.

The Clarivate Analytics selection process includes rigorous evaluation and analysis of data from highly cited papers published in scientific and social science journals indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded™ and the Social Sciences Citation Index™ over an 11-year period. Furthermore, this international classification is a key component of rankings with significant global influence in the academic world, such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai ranking.
