A new Aldi superstore has officially opened in one part of Merseyside. The £7m development was completed a few weeks ago and was officially unveiled at its “grand opening” this morning (November 13) by Team GB rowing hero, Harriet Taylor.

The site of the supermarket was previously a disused and derelict space which has now been completely transformed and repurposed. Located on Pendle Drive in Litherland, the land was occupied by Sefton Council-owned facilities, but was taken on by Aldi after it secured planning permission back in February, despite objections from rival supermarket Tesco.

The new store comes as part of Aldi’s huge expansion plans for its UK operations which was announced on September 15. The £1.6bn investment will also go towards upgrading its current facilities, the development of distribution centres and creating new outlets such as the one now open in Litherland, and a proposed new store in Aintree.

A “grand opening” ceremony took place at Pendle Drive this morning, with Team GB bronze medallist Harriet Taylor cutting the red ribbon alongside local school children. Harriet then gave away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables, before delivering an inspirational assembly for the pupils at Holy Spirit Primary School.

Aldi also offered the pupils the opportunity to win a £20 gift voucher to spend at the new store. The children were tasked with creating a poster to show what healthy eating means to them, and Harriet announced the winner during the assembly.

The Team GB star said: “I’ve had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning. It was an honour to officially open the store and welcome customers inside for the first time.

“It was great to speak with the children at Holy Spirit Primary School about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family. Hopefully I’ve also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.”

The Pendle Drive supermarket will be run by store manager Sarah McGuiness, along with a team of 32 colleagues from the local community. The retail giant also confirmed there are still more roles to fill and are actively encouraging applications.

Ms McGuiness said: “It’s been a wonderful morning here at the opening of Aldi Pendle Drive. It was lovely to welcome our new customers into the store, and I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks.

The store will also accommodate 123 car parking spaces, including eight accessible, eight parent and child spaces, and provision for electric vehicle charging points, with underground infrastructure to add a further 20 in the future.

There will also be seven covered, short-stay bicycle parking spaces for customers, and long stay bicycle parking spaces for staff, located within the store’s warehouse.

The new Aldi store is also calling on charities and food banks in Merseyside to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community.
