The Jacaranda club on Slater Street has slashed its alcohol prices in what customers are calling a “revolutionary” idea. Prices across pints, beer cans and sprits have been reduced by 30% in order to help support grassroots artists.
Announcing the new prices, the Jacaranda said: “SUPPORT THE SUPPORTS. Support grassroots bands by catching the support before the headliner, and get 30% off the bar for your troubles.” The price of a pint of Guinness has been reduced from £5.70 to £3.99.
A can of Red Stripe Jamaican Lager has gone from £5.50 to £3.85, Hooch is reduced from £6.00 to £4.20, and a single and double spirit is now £4.20 and £6.30 respectively.
Nearly 80 venues closed from February to September in 2023 across the UK due to financial issues largely brought about by Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis. The report saw around one venue close every two weeks last year, with 200 still on red alert to close.
Liverpool’s Jacaranda is celebrated as one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic grassroots music venues – a reputation cemented by its place in music history as part of the The Beatles‘ origin story. With a legacy spanning more than 60 years, the venue remains a cornerstone of the city’s music scene.

Graham Stanley, who took over as Jacaranda Records’ director in 2014, previously told the ECHO something has to change if grassroots venues are to survive.
He said: “It’s been a really tough year for the entire industry. People are certainly feeling the squeeze on their pockets. Operators are reluctant to put prices up because people may not be able to afford it.

“At the same time, bills across the country are going up. The end result is margins are squeezed until its no longer viable to carry on. If grassroots music venues are to survive, something has to change.”
