‘Roti King’ is well known in Malaysian street food and is bringing its wealth of taste and experience to Edinburgh for its first expansion outside of England. It has been welcomed as the first Malaysian unit in the capital. Edinburgh is set for a true Malaysian experience in the heart of one of the UK’s premier food destinations in December.
A Taste of Malaysia in Edinburgh’s Heart
Located just off the iconic Princes Street, Roti King’s new Edinburgh restaurant will transport diners to the bustling streets of Malaysia. Picture the lively atmosphere of Malaysian street markets, where freshly made roti canai and rich, aromatic curries fill the air. Guests will have the unique opportunity to watch chefs hand-stretch roti in an open kitchen, adding an interactive element to the dining experience.
Signature Dishes to Savor
Roti King’s menu brings the true essence of Malaysian cuisine to Edinburgh. Among the must-try dishes are the signature roti canai, served with dhal, chicken, mutton, or fish kari. Other popular choices include Char Kway Teow, a delicious stir-fried rice noodle dish with prawns and egg, and the famous Malaysian fried chicken. This dish is marinated in a fragrant blend of garlic, ginger, and lemongrass, before being crisped to perfection with cornstarch and rice flour. To add a spicy twist, it’s served with homemade sambal.
A Fusion of Old and New in Design
The design of the new restaurant blends modern touches with elements of the building’s original charm. Exposed brickwork and murals inspired by the streets of Malaysia create an inviting atmosphere. These artistic features pay homage to the rich history of the building, offering a space that celebrates both the traditional and the contemporary. The Malaysian-inspired graffiti and vibrant decor provide a warm, welcoming environment for diners to enjoy.
The Founder’s Journey to Success
Roti King’s journey began in 2004, when founder Sugen Gopal arrived in the UK. Starting with a small kiosk in Colindale’s Oriental City, Gopal’s dedication to perfecting Malaysian cuisine quickly gained a loyal following. After years of pop-ups and residencies, he opened his first restaurant in Euston in 2014. Today, Roti King operates four locations in London, with the Edinburgh launch marking a significant step in their expansion plans.
Roti King’s Expansion Continues
The Edinburgh opening follows recent launches in Brighton and Spitalfields, as part of Roti King’s deliberate strategy to bring authentic Malaysian food to cities with a rich food culture. This expansion represents a significant milestone in the restaurant’s journey, as it continues to win over the UK with its high-quality, flavour-packed dishes.
Giving Back: Roti King’s Commitment to Edinburgh
Roti King’s commitment to community goes beyond just serving delicious food. In collaboration with the charity Children First, the Edinburgh restaurant will support local children in need. From December to February, Roti King will match every donation made at the restaurant’s giving tree with food donations, helping provide warm meals and creating opportunities for children and families to learn how to make roti themselves.
