Passengers have been warned not to travel on trains all over the country as Storm Claudia wreaks havoc everywhere.

Train journeys have been cancelled, the M5 has been backed up with nearly two hours of delays and roads across the South West have been closed due to flooding.

Trains between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester have been cancelled due to flooding on the tracks.

One journey, which set out from Manchester earlier this afternoon, was turned around at Stroud as it was reportedly “not safe” to continue to Bristol.

Now, CrossCountry has issued a “do not travel” warning for several routes to Bristol and the rest of the South West, adding that the company cannot guarantee that passengers will arrive at their destination.

In a post on social media, the company said: “STORM CLAUDIA: DO NOT TRAVEL between Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central / Bristol / the South West. CrossCountry cannot guarantee that you will arrive at your destination if you travel today. Tickets from today can be used for travel tomorrow.”

Trains to and from Plymouth and Penzance – the end of the line for many journeys through the South West – face delays and many have already been cancelled, according to the CrossCountry journey planner.

said journeys to Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads and Exeter may be cancelled or delayed. Further disruption is expected for anyone travelling to North Devon, as the line between Exeter St Davids and Barnstaple is expected to be closed until Monday, November 17.

National Rail has said: “There are yellow and amber weather warnings associated with Storm Claudia in place today (Friday 14 November) and tomorrow (Saturday 15 November), across parts of England.”

The Met Office has issued both yellow and amber weather warnings in the South West. Further heavy rain and disruption are expected into the night.

An amber weather warning has been in effect since 6am on Friday, November 14 and is set to end at 6am on Saturday morning.

The Met Office said: “Storm Claudia is expected to bring heavy rain during Friday into early Saturday that may lead to some flooding and disruption.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the South West, a yellow weather warning has been issued over the same timeframe. It covers around half of Devon, Somerset, Bristol and Gloucestershire, as well as extending to the rest of the country.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks, said: “Storm Claudia is currently bringing intense rainfall across parts of England and Wales. We’ve recorded 81.8mm of rainfall already and the intense downpours will continue into the evening before weakening in the early hours.

“Impacted areas will continue to see increasingly lighter rainfall through Saturday morning before eventually turning drier through the afternoon and into Sunday. There remains a risk of flooding so people should keep up to date with local flood warnings and take action where necessary.”

A host of flood warnings and alerts are in place across the South West, including several in Bristol and Gloucestershire.
