Bristol is set to bask in gorgeous sunshine and searing heat this week, as temperatures soar to a whopping 26C.

This week is expected to be the warmest of the year so far and predicted temperatures will far exceed those normally seen throughout April.

Between today (Monday, April 28) and the end of the month, temperatures will rise from 22C-25C.

According the Met Office, the beginning of May will see even warmer weather and the mercury will rise even higher to 26C, making it warmer than the Greek holiday destination Crete.

Sunshine will be out across most of the UK, the weather forecaster predict, with some locations seeing temperatures as high as 29C – nearly double the end of April average of 16C.

But overnights, temperatures will drop back down to the low teens, so “we shouldn’t suffer too much with warm nights”, Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said.

He added: “We’re certainly on track to see the warmest spell of the year so far.

“The warm trend has already started now across southern areas. At the moment we’ve got up to 21.5C in central London and Hull.

“As we go through the next few days we will see the warm spell continue.”

The weather will come close to what the Met Office considers a heatwave in some areas, but there is not likely to be a heatwave widely, Mr Snell said.

According to the Met Office, the definition of a heatwave is three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding the “heatwave threshold”, which varies across the country.

The threshold is 25C for most of the UK, with slightly higher numbers for the south and east, and rising to 28C in London. In Bristol, the threshold is 27C.

On Friday temperatures will start to drop towards the average for the time of year, with temperatures in the high teens in the south and mid teens in the north, Mr Snell said.
