Residents living in a number of areas along the River Mersey are being urged to ‘be prepared’ for flooding due to rising river levels.
The Environment Agency’s Flood Alert map for Greater Manchester
Two flood alerts remain active in Greater Manchester after Storm Claudia brought massive downpours.
Greater Manchester was among the areas of the UK battered by long, heavy downpours and strong winds on Friday.
Two flood alerts were issued yesterday and remain are still in force this morning (November 15).
According to the Environment Agency, who publish their alerts on the government website, flooding is still possible for the ‘Middle River Mersey catchment’ including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

“Locations most affected will be low lying land and roads around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks and their tributaries”
Other possible areas of flooding include Stretford, Gatley, hulme>Cheadle Hulme and Cheadle, they add.
The alert says. “We are closely monitoring the situation . Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses .”
An alert is also still in place for the ‘River Mersey Uplands catchment’ including Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton and Stalybridge in Tameside, as well as Glossop.
The most likely affected areas are ‘low lying land and roads around the Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett and Etherow and their tributaries’ but Saddleworth, Mossley, New Mills, Hazel Grove, Marple, Romiley and Hyde could also be affected it says.
An update on both alerts is expected after 10am.
A flood alert means flooding is ‘possible’ and that residents in the affected areas should ‘be prepared.’
It is less serious than a flood warning, which means that flooding is ‘imminent’ or already occuring and that immediate action is required.
A flood warning previously issued for the Cheadle Wood and Ford Lane area of Stockport was removed shortly before 4:30am this morning.
