Hull City remain relaxed about Joe Gelhardt’s situation and expect him to remain at the MKM Stadium throughout the winter transfer window.
Gelhardt, who pushed through his summer return to the MKM Stadium, has been one of the Tigers’ stand-out players in what has been a terrific start to the season for the Tigers under Sergej Jakirovic.
His sublime finish from Charlie Hughes’ perfect pass to seal a 3-2 win over Portsmouth last weekend was his seventh goal of a hugely productive season so far, and his fifth in the last six games.
During that period, the 23-year-old has also collected two assists, with one of those coming for Kyle Joseph to head in from a corner against Pompey.
Gelhardt is now level on seven goals with Oli McBurnie, who hasn’t featured since coming off in the 3-2 win at Birmingham City last month, but his delightful form has raised concerns amongst some supporters that they could lose the in-form ace when the window opens on New Year’s Day.
Leeds United do have the option to recall him during a window early in the month, but as it stands, they have no plans to recall Gelhardt in January and believe the forward is best-suited to staying at the MKM Stadium through until the summer, when there will undoubtedly be a big decision to be made if he keeps up his impressive scoring run.
The Whites are struggling in the Premier League and are just two points above the relegation zone after last weekend’s comprehensive defeat at Nottingham Forest, with boss Daniel Farke under pressure.
Gelhardt remains under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2027, and should United fall back into the Championship, a future in West Yorkshire is not out of the question, given the way he’s flourished at City.
Next summer, City expect to be able to trade normally once again, and would naturally like to make Gelhardt’s move to the MKM Stadium permanent, while the player himself is keen to stay at the club, but there is plenty of water to pass under the bridge before any such decisions will be made.
