The luxury Manchester city centre hotel co-owned by Manchester United legend Gary Neville has outlined plans to expand – by transforming the huge building across the road.
The Stock Exchange Hotel has become one of Manchester’s hottest destinations in recent years, with a string of major global stars staying there, a clutch of awards, and even full hotel takeovers by the likes of Madonna and Bruce Springsteen.
It hosted Noel Gallagher during Oasis’ big summer run of gigs in Manchester, while Liam Gallagher was a more recent visitor, spotted at the hotel with family last month.
Now, bosses are keen to capitalise on the success of the existing hotel by planning an ambitious mega-expansion in the building directly opposite.

Plans have been submitted to Manchester Council to transform office block Norfolk House, which sits opposite the Stock Exchange on Norfolk Street, into a 95-bedroom luxury hotel and spa extension to the main hotel.

The plans, submitted at the end of last month, are seeking permission for change of use for the office into hotel accommodation with associated minor alterations to the exterior of the 1990s building.
The existing Stock Exchange Hotel boasts 40 bedrooms, spread across the Grade II listed interiors of the historic former Manchester Stock Exchange.
If plans are approved, the new building would become the “Stock Exchange Suites” with 95 bedrooms, as a major expansion on the offering at the current hotel. It will also include a spa, restaurant, gym and meeting rooms.

Norfolk House was purpose-built as 54,127 sq.ft office building in 1997, and is arranged over five floors.
It also has a two-storey basement car park but the plans state that that has a separate lease and is not included in the planning application.
The planning statement says: “The proposal involves the conversion of Norfolk House, an existing five-storey office into hotel accommodation to deliver a total of 95 rooms over four upper floors, which will operate as an integral part of the existing Stock Exchange Hotel and will be referred to as the Stock Exchange Suites.
“The ground floor will incorporate a number of ancillary uses to the Hotel such as lounge, gym, spa, meeting rooms and restaurant/bar.”
The plans are currently out for consultation until December 4.

“Our commitment to delivering outstanding guest experiences has enabled us to realise those ambitions and, after an incredible year, this success has given us the confidence to submit plans to expand into Norfolk House.
“We are excited about the potential to enhance what we offer at Stock Exchange Hotel and bring even more exceptional experiences to this world-class city.”

Co-owned by former United team-mates Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, the five-star hotel features 40 bespoke bedrooms, alongside a number of signature suites and a top floor penthouse residence called The House which has played host to superstars like Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran and Sir Paul McCartney.
First opened as a stock exchange building in 1906, it has been heralded as an ‘exquisite example’ of Edwardian Baroque architecture with many original features remaining in place like its marble pillars and ‘gleaming’ brass fixtures.

Gary and Ryan, along with hospitality expert Winston Zahra, opened the building as a hotel in 2019.
Last year, the hotel’s grand domed hall was unveiled with a glamorous new restaurant fronted by Michelin-starred chef Niall Keating.

Rooms within the luxurious building can range from £295 for King Rooms, while the largest penthouse in Manchester will set you back a super-luxe £4,500.
On the latter, it is in such high demand that you’ll never see it available to book, and enquiries have to be made via the hotel itself. Other suites include the boardroom suite from £2.5K per night and Goldstone at £1500 per night.
