The Met exhibition will present and examine the Black dandy, dandy describing a person “who is extremely devoted to style and approaches it as a discipline.” Originally imposed during trans-Atlantic slavery as a uniform signifying servitude in the 18th century, the Black dandy is defined and redefined by using fashionable styling as a way to amplify identity and class. The exhibit is also organized into specific sections representative of 12 characteristics of dandyism including presence, distinction, disguise, ownership, freedom, respectability, champion, beauty, heritage, cool, and cosmopolitanism.
The exhibitions are nothing without the curators and staff that help bring the archives alive. Thankfully, Miller provided more than just the inspiration text. The author also serves as a guest curator for the exhibition.
