If you drive into Bolton town centre from Manchester, it’s hard to miss the speed camera looking over you on the A666.

It’s one of thousands of speed cameras in the country, which first appeared on British roads in 1992.

Most drivers know where speed cameras are on their regular routes, including the St Peter’s Way camera. But few will fully understand the reach the cameras have.

More than 250 traffic cameras have been installed in Greater Manchester, and there are hundreds more ‘mobile locations’ where the police can enforce the limits temporarily.

However, despite containing sections of major motorway, Bolton has the third-smallest total of speed cameras in Greater Manchester. It has only 18 of the region’s 262.

Although Bolton doesn’t have many cameras, they do police a wide range of offences. Along with the spot-check cameras, there are average speed cameras and red traffic light cameras.

Now, we’ve used data from Greater Manchester’s 10 councils to compile a list of every speed camera in the city-region.

We’ve added to that list of cameras from early 2024 with more recent announcements, and from database Speeding Fine Calculator. We then cross-referenced camera locations with Google Streetview images to confirm they were still there in 2025.

The table below gives a complete list of 262 speed, average speed, red light, and yellow box cameras, and the speed limit in force where appropriate.

It’s worth checking it before your next new journey, as being caught out by a camera will lead to a £100 fine and three penalty points on your driving licence as a minimum.

However, punishments can be harsher for more egregious offences.

If a driver accrues 12 penalty points on their licence within three years, they can be disqualified from driving. The limit is lower for new drivers, who can be disqualified for attaining six points in their first two years behind the wheel.
