An arrest has been made after a man was assaulted in a busy Liverpool shopping area. At around 4.30pm, officers were called to Williamson Square to reports of a man being assaulted.

An officer chased a suspect and he was detained near to B&M on Clayton Square. A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault. He has been taken to a police station for interview. Officers remain in the area carrying out enquiries.

The victim, a man in his 30s, is believed to have been punched and kicked. He has been taken to hospital for assessment. When the ECHO visited the street this evening, a small cordon had been put up on Basnett Street where it meets Williamson Square.

A police van and two officers were present.

Shoppers looking to use the street to access Williamson Square were turned away.

The shops and restaurants in the area were open as usual.

Detective Inspector Neil Dillon said: “Williamson Square was busy at the time of this incident and we are grateful to witnesses who have already come forward.

“If you saw anything and are yet to speak to us, please do so as soon as possible.

“Violence has no place on our streets and we are working hard to establish the circumstances.”
