Michael Morrison has told his Cambridge United team-mates to ‘look inwardly’ as their final game as a League One outfit comes against his former club Birmingham City.

The veteran centre-back, who is the United’s captain, was part of the team that lost 2-1 to Burton Albion at the weekend thereby confirming a relegation whose foundations had been laid under Garry Monk.

The former Blues boss left Cambridge in February with the club bottom of the table and eight points from safety. They rallied briefly under Neil Harris but will now play next season in the bottom tier.

But not before they face Morrison’s former employers at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday, a game that will see Blues complete their record breaking campaign.

Morrison, who played 183 games in five seasons at St Andrew’s, took to social media to react to relegation and posted: “It was a horrible weekend for us all @cambridgeunitedfc This season has undoubtably been the hardest of my career and I’m sure it has been for lots of people connected to the club.

“As fans you deserve more. I know I speak for all the players when I say thank you for your unwavering support. This isn’t the forum to talk about the failures on and off the pitch but as players we need to look inwardly at ourselves. However, football and life move quickly and I believe that Bonz and Neil will create something exciting for the club and community to be proud of! United in Endeavour.”

Blues play Blackpool on Wednesday evening, before rounding off their season with a game against Cambridge, who were hammered 4-0 when they came to St Andrew’s in February.
