EastEnders spoilers follow for Monday’s episode (28 April), which is available to watch now on streaming service BBC iPlayer and hasn’t yet aired on TV.

EastEnders has seemed to confirm why Nicola Mitchell killed Shireen Bashar – to stop a big secret from coming out.

With work set to begin on Paradise Park, the site where Harry’s ex-girlfriend is buried, Nicola desperately tried to dispose of the body before it’s too late. But her plans failed, and Teddy found out about her deadly crime.

Nicola tried to explain herself in today’s episode, claiming that she paid Benji to scare Shireen off and things got out of hand, but furious Teddy didn’t believe her story.

Teddy headed to the party at Harry’s Barn to tell Harry the truth about Shireen, but Nicola stopped him just in time, pleading that the news would destroy their son.

Teddy told his wife to pack a bag and run, as Benji is an experienced killer and won’t get caught, having planted evidence to pin the murder on Nicola.

Nicola did as she was told and packed a suitcase, but Barney discovered his mum’s plans just before she left the house.

Teddy later found Barney upset in the Square, who told his dad he knew about Nicola’s departure. However, some wise words from the teen gave Teddy second thoughts about how to respond to this bombshell.

He went home but was surprised to see Nicola’s suitcase still in the hallway. She had left a note to tell him that she had gone to fix the situation herself, leaving him concerned.

Meanwhile, Nicola snuck into Paradise Park and used Benji’s directions to find the exact spot where Shireen is buried. She frantically began digging while talking to herself – revealing why she ordered Shireen’s killing.

“You were going to ruin Harry’s life,” she said. “And you knew too much. Sooner or later, you would have told Teddy that Barney wasn’t his. I couldn’t let that happen.”

At that point, Teddy arrived at the site and stopped an emotional Nicola from digging, telling her that they were going to fix this mess together and she had to follow his orders.

With Teddy seemingly now in control, what will he and Nicola do next? And is the secret about Barney’s paternity rising closer to the surface?
