A new mural celebrating 100 figures from music has been unveiled. From The Beatles to OMD, The Teardrop Explodes to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the mural is designed and created by artist Joseph Venning and is funded by SP Energy Networks and The Beatles Story via The Beatles Legacy Group, and facilitated by Liverpool Business Improvement District (BID).
The mural, which can be found on Mathew Street and a few steps from The Cavern and Eric’s, was unveiled on Wednesday, November 19. Wirral based artist Joseph Venning has already created one mural in Liverpool, a 40m wall at ACC Liverpool celebrating the city’s sporting, artistic, comedic and dramatic talent.
His new mural at Mathew Street is 15m wide and pictures the 100 musicians as an audience, with Mathew Street as the stage itself. Speaking to the ECHO, the artist said he has been working from 6am until 9pm to get the massive project completed.
He said: “I think I worked my way from left to right. So it would probably have been Jayne Casey (Big in Japan) up in the top left-hand corner [who was painted first]. There are 100 musicians on there and they’re all kind of arranged in chronological order with the older Mersey Beat acts at the back, then working our way down to the newer acts at the front.

“Around here is very focused on the history of the local area, especially with the Beatles and the Mersey beat. So it’s nice to kind of put the more contemporary acts like CamelPhat and Jamie Webster and the rest of them front and centre really.”
The Farm’s Peter Hooton, Chair of The Beatles Legacy Group, who have co-funded the mural said: “We are really excited about this brilliant new mural which brings to life Liverpool’s musical heritage, in the heart of the city.
“Tourists flock to Mathew St because of its bars and clubs but also because of its history, so it is fitting that it is located near The Cavern and Eric’s, the venues that shaped much of that history.
“People will undoubtedly spend time pointing out the artists on the mural that have contributed so much to the culture of the city.”

Some of the musicians who feature on the mural attended the unveiling event this evening. Crosby-born DJ and producer Yousef said it was a “nice surprise” after finding out a few days ago that he would be featured on the mural.
He told the ECHO: “I think it is great. It is a nice little nudge for people’s enthusiasm for music in the city.
“I didn’t realise it was going to be so big and the detail – it is great. There’s so many famous faces involved, newer faces which is really important.”
Red Rum Club frontman Fran Doran told the ECHO it was “an honour” to be included. He said: “Joe has done a great job. I’d seen pictures of it, but I didn’t realise it was this big. The fact it’s situated on the most famous music street in the world is an honour.”
