Deployed by Network Rail, the vehicle is being used to tackle the seasonal problem of leaves falling on the tracks.

Crushed leaves can create a slippery, black layer that reduces traction and can interfere with train detection systems.

Rhiannon Jones, signalling maintenance engineer for Network Rail, said: “We’ve integrated the ‘Flon Rover’ into our seasonal maintenance routine and have been making as much use of it as possible.

“It’s made a real difference in reducing the number of failures relating to leaves causing problems on the line.”

While larger railhead treatment trains (RHTTs) cannot access the whole network, some areas remain inaccessible.

The ‘Flon Rover’ operates in these locations, treating up to 20 miles of track per night.

It will visit Knottingley, with additional routes planned across Yorkshire throughout the autumn season.
