The Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) has announced the first major international performances for its 7–30 August 2026 edition, showcasing world-leading artists across music, opera, dance, and theatre. Tickets for these four highly anticipated events go on public sale on November 27.
Leading the unmissable line-up is the long-awaited return of the Berliner Philharmoniker, with Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko leading two exceptional concerts. The orchestra will bring their unmatched artistry to the Festival’s closing weekend, performing beloved works by Beethoven (joined by soloist Augustin Hadelich), Tchaikovsky, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and Scriabin’s Third Symphony.
Returning to the Festival after more than two decades, San Francisco Ballet will present the European premiere of Mere Mortals. This bold, full-company work by Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton reimagines the myth of Pandora’s Box through the lens of AI, featuring an original score performed live by electronic musician Floating Points (Sam Shepherd) and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
In opera, the Zurich Opera House presents the UK production premiere of Verdi’s A Masked Ball. This lavish, large-scale production, featuring two stellar alternating casts, will be conducted by the internationally sought-after Gianandrea Noseda.
Opening the theatre programme is a powerful new commission, A Trial – after an Enemy of the People, marking the beginning of a historic three-year collaboration between the EIF, Holland Festival, and Festival d’Avignon. This modern continuation of Ibsen’s classic, which sharply looks at authoritarianism and fake news, is led by award-winning Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy and stars Golden Globe-nominated actor Wagner Moura (Narcos).
Festival Director Nicola Benedetti stated that these works “offer a glimpse of what’s to come… as we grow and push artistic excellence even further.” Continuing its commitment to access, 50,000 tickets for the 2026 Festival will be available for £30 or under, including £10 tickets for all events.
