A 60-year-old man has died and a 68-year-old woman is “very poorly” after a “serious and tragic” fire at a maisonette in Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police were called to Hardrow Road, Leeds at 9.34am today (20 November) by fire services after reports of a fire affecting two adjacent properties. Two people – a woman from the upper maisonette flat and a man from the lower one – were found to have suffered very serious injuries.

The man, believed to be in his 60s, has died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire. The woman, aged 68, was taken to the hospital where she is described as in “a very poorly” but stable condition. Speaking on behalf of West Yorkshire Police, Detective Inspector Dan Ridgeway of Leeds District CID, said: “This has clearly been a very serious and tragic incident in which a man has lost his life. Initial enquiries into the cause of the fire are underway, with colleagues from the fire service and emergency services remaining on scene.

“Officers are working to support relatives of those involved, and a full investigation of the circumstances of the incident will take place.”
