Motorists faced rush-hour traffic chaos after a five-vehicle crash closed a main Birmingham Road and led to snarl-ups on surrounding streets.
The crash took place on Chester Road near Castle Vale, which links Spitfire Island with the M6’s Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich, shortly before 3pm.
Five vehicles, believed to be two cars, two vans and a lorry collided into each other shutting the road headed towards the motorway.

Drone images show the extent of the traffic issues caused on nearby roads.
Congestion built up along Chester Road, near Spitfire Island and the A47 Fort Parkway as well as roads into Castle Vale.

West Midlands Roads posted on X and said: “Spitfire Island Incident.
“Road closed towards M6. Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for your journey and consider alternative routes where possible.”

National Express West Midlands confirmed its 28, 64, 71 and 96 services were diverting towards Castle Bromwich ONLY via: Fort Parkway, Bromford Lane and Coleshill Road.
The road was cleared and reopened at around 5.30pm with West Midlands Roads saying: “Some residual delays remain in the area as traffic returns to normal. Please allow extra time for your journey.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving five vehicles on Chester Road, Birmingham, just before 3pm.
“Thankfully, no one was reported to have been seriously injured.
