Lidl has shared its latest list of potential locations for new stores, including a number of sites across Merseyside. The list named Anfield, Crosby, Ellesmere Port, Prescot, Kirkby, Wirral and Widnes as potential sites.

The list comes as Lidl GB has announced plans to invest half a billion pounds into its expansion, as it moves forward with plans to open more than 40 new stores this financial year.

The list of potential Liverpool locations was outlined in the supermarket’s 2025 site requirements brochure.

Lidl’s Chief Development Officer, Richard Taylor, said: “This level of investment is a clear sign of our ambition. As we enter our fourth decade in Great Britain and hurtle towards a thousand stores, there are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store.

“Our latest site requirements brochure reinforces the scale of our ambition for the future. New Lidl stores mean new jobs, new opportunities for British suppliers, and continued investment into local economies.

“We’re proud to be one of the fastest-growing supermarkets in the country, and with this investment, we’re taking another big step in our journey.”

40 new Lidl stores are already in the works for this year including locations in Moreton and Southport.

While the sites listed indicate areas of interest to Lidl they do not indicate explicit plans for new stores or openings.

Rather, it represents a long list of potential sites, of which a proportion will eventually be developed and opened as stores.

In 2023, Lidl backed out of plans to build a new 18,000 sq ft store at the former site of The Abbey Cinema, on Church Road North in Wavertree.

A campaign was launched to save the building from initial demolition plans and the former cinema gained Grade II-listed status in 2021.
