Bristol City must do “everything” to address the contract situations of players heading towards the end of their deals at Ashton Gate, Gerhard Struber insists, with the Robins boss admitting he “would love” to work with both Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner in the future.
Both Vyner and Mehmeti played crucial roles in the Reds’ 3-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime. Vyner started and kept a clean sheet from a dynamic left-sided centre-back position, whilst Mehmeti assisted all three goals as City secured a win in four games and climbed back into the play-off places.
The 24-year-old curled an excellent corner onto the head of Rob Dickie after four minutes, before finding Emil Riis – who volleyed home – on the half-hour mark. Then, with less than 10 minutes left to play, Mehmeti sprung Swansea’s backline with a smart through ball, which Yu Hirakawa calmly placed in the bottom left corner.

Both the Albanian winger and Vyner are entering the final months of their respective contracts in south Bristol, but City’s technical director, Brian Tinnion, confirmed at last month’s fans forum that both players have been offered new deals.
While Struber is clear he wants to retain both first-team regulars beyond their current agreements, he believes the Robins find themselves in a “waiting position.”
“Yes, of course,” the head coach told Bristol Live when asked if he wanted Mehmeti to realise his potential at Ashton Gate. “There is not one player in this team that I would want to lose.
“I like this team, I love to work with this team, and we have to do everything that we attend the contracts with players that have maybe the chance they could jump in the near future.

“Right now, I am in a really good exchange with both players,” Struber added when asked if there was an update he could provide on both players’ situation. “But also we have to have respect about it.
“It’s right now, a little bit of a waiting position, but they have, from us – I would say – a really good future in the hand. It’s more on them, so I would love to work with Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner in the future.”
In recent months, Vyner has been deployed in central midfield by Struber as a result of the Reds’ injury list in the middle of the park. With all of Jason Knight, Max Bird, and Joe Williams sidelined for much of the campaign so far, Adam Randell has been the only fit, senior midfielder available.
Having returned to the backline against Watford last time out, Vyner lined up in an almost hybrid position against the Swans on Saturday. At times, the 28-year-old was the Reds’ most advanced midfielder, whilst on other occasions, he was their deepest defender, slotting into the back three alongside Dickie and George Tanner.

The minor tweak to the academy graduate’s role was the result of something Struber and his coaching team have been working on over the international break in order to get the better of the managerless South Wales side.
“Today, this was one of the small things that we changed, and he did a really good job, how we want to do it,” the Reds boss smiled. “Especially in on-ball moments.
“How he steps back and we build with him [and] the back three, when he steps back in a diagonal build-up moment; we always overloaded in the first draw, in dynamic with Zaky, but also the following action from Adam was really good – what we trained.
“So, in more ways, a little bit of a new inference helped the boys today to realise the points.”
