The eerie figure stands motionless at the road side
A mysterious figure standing motionless beside a road in Wales has left motorists feeling deeply unsettled. Numerous sightings have been reported of the eerie figure whose head slowly turns as vehicles pass by.
Witnesses say they’ve spotted the “creepy” figure in all weather conditions, occasionally during daylight hours but mainly at night. It’s said to remain fixed in the same location for hours on end, sometimes drenched through to the skin, leading to suggestions it could be an unsettling scarecrow.
A flurry of sightings emerged recently following a video being posted on social media. Drivers on the A497 have since reported experiencing “goosebumps” when passing the location near Haven’s Hafan y Môr Holiday Park close to Pwllheli on the Llŷn Peninsula.
One documented sighting goes back to May 20. North Wales Police (NWP) officers have attended at least once this month – yet the sightings have persisted.
The figure is reportedly a man who “loves watching traffic at night”, reports NorthWalesLive.
While some have encouraged drivers to pull over to check on the man’s wellbeing others have advised against it. On social media one woman recounted being flagged down in Mynytho, near Abersoch, where “a gang set on the car” attempting to force her door open.
“Always lock your doors and never stop for anyone,” she warned.
Online individuals have voiced concern for the man’s safety. However police stated that when officers responded this month following motorists’ reports they had no welfare concerns. .
The situation came to a head in the early hours of Saturday, November 8, when a grandmother was rushing her daughter and unwell grandson to hospital in Porthmadog. They drove past the man at 12.30am and he remained in the identical spot when they returned.
“We passed him again on our way home at 2am,” said the grandmother. “He hadn’t moved an inch. It was just odd that he was still there in exactly the same place.
“He stood motionless – all he did was turn his head. It was really eerie at that moment in time – it proper freaked us out.” For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter.
As the daughter hadn’t spotted him she recorded the roadside when they returned to demonstrate the figure wasn’t imagined. This was subsequently shared online to alert others in case of welfare concerns.
Even those who’ve only watched the footage say the sighting left them unsettled. One man said online: “It is a creepy video no matter how you see it…. it is very disturbing.”
The stationary man was spotted by another motorist around the same time that morning. He was seen again at 5.30am by a man on his way to work who contacted the police.
Another double sighting was reported two days earlier between 12.30am and 1.30am.
A driver claimed to have encountered the man in October. The most recent known sighting was on Friday, November 14.
A few people stopped and they said he was “absolutely soaked”. Others said they rang 101 for the police on various occasions.
The police force received a call at 5.32am on November 8 with a concern for the safety of an individual on the A497 at Abererch. A spokesman said officers attended and spoke to the person in question, finding no cause for concern.
Typically sightings of this individual have been reported in the same location. However, on Tuesday, November 11, a local woman encountered a man between Pentrefelin and Criccieth approximately eight miles away.
Sharing her experience online, she said: “When we stopped he could hardly talk and was soaking wet. He said he had been out walking since 11.30am – it was around 5.30pm-6pm when we came across him.
“He was on his knees keeled over. We phoned the police as we didn’t know anything about him.
“Once he came to himself he started talking – he said he loves watching traffic at night on the side of the road whatever the weather. He’s on holiday here from Oxfordshire and is staying near Abererch in a holiday cottage.”
