More than 80 MPs, led by Sandrine Le Feur (EPR), chair of the National Assembly’s Sustainable Development Committee, are calling for a “ban on Shein in France” to “protect workers, public health and the planet”, in an article published in La Tribune Dimanche.

With the Asian brand opening at the BHV department store in Paris in early November, “it’s not fashion that’s being democratised, it’s Shein that’s being legitimised”, argue 83 MPs, including many Ensemble pour la République members, alongside, among others, Marie-Noëlle Battistel (PS), Anne-Cécile Violland (Horizons), Josiane Corneloup (LR) and Erwan Balanant (MoDem).
“The most brutal face of fast fashion (…) is giving itself a veneer of respectability”, but this cannot “mask what lies behind the façade, as it destroys the planet, our jobs and consumers’ health”, said the signatories.
“One measure is essential: a ban on Shein in France”, they assert, accusing the ultra-fast fashion giant of “unfair competition” and of flooding the market with “toxic products.”
“Since the debate can no longer be confined to indignation, the National Assembly’s Sustainable Development Committee has summoned Shein’s executives to finally hear them on their practices,” said the MPs. “A hearing they had tried to avoid,” they added.
Initially scheduled for November 26, the hearing was postponed to December 2, with the e-commerce platform saying it was unable to honour the original date due to a court hearing on the same day.
In the government’s crosshairs, the platform has been summoned on Wednesday morning before the Paris Judicial Court, which is to rule on suspending the site in France after the discovery of the sale of child-like sex dolls and Category A weapons.
Shein had already declined a hearing on November 18 before the fact-finding mission on checks on products imported into France, citing this court date.
In addition, a motion for a European resolution was tabled this week in the National Assembly by MPs from across the political spectrum – except the LFI, RN and UDR groups – calling for tougher action against certain platforms. It will be examined on Wednesday.
Shein has already received three fines in France this year, totalling 191 million euros, notably for false promotions and misleading information.
