Nigel Farage will travel to Scotland next month as his party prepares for a crunch Holyrood election campaign.

The Reform UK leader will speak at a Falkirk hotel just a short distance from where regular anti-migration protests have been held in the town. The Clacton MP will appear at the MacDonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa in Grange Road on December 6, with current polling suggesting Reform is on course to emerge as the second or third largest party in terms of MSPs.

Reform still lacks a dedicated Scottish leader and lacks a policy platform on a range of key devolved issues, such as the NHS and schools. Falkirk has become the centre for protests north of the Border against the continued use of hotels to temporarily house asylum seekers while their claims are proceesed.

Hundreds of pro and anti-immigration demonstrators have regularly squared up outside the Cladhan Hotel in Falkirk, which is just three miles from where Farage will speak.

A Reform source said: “We are holding it somewhere where we could simply get a venue which could hold hundreds of people in central Scotland and wasn’t in a town centre.

“In Glasgow or Edinburgh you are going to have problems parking.

“Being near Falkirk was never part of the consideration. We won’t be anywhere close to the asylum hotel.”

Thomas Kerr, Reform campaign chair in Scotland, said: “Nigel Farage is one of the most popular political leaders this country has saw – that’s why we sold almost 400 tickets in 24 hours for this rally. With six months to go, Reform UK is gearing up for a historic election.”

Michael Matheson, the SNP MSP for Falkirk West, said: “Nigel Farage’s attempts to stoke division and spread his hateful rhetoric in Falkirk will not work.

“Farage is the epitome of the establishment, not only is he a Thatcher-loving public-school boy, but he’s been very open about his plans to privatise the NHS and roll back on years of devolution. And let us not forget the pile of Brexit lies he told.

“Farage is a stain on our politics. “
