A pedestrian was left injured after being struck by a car near Bury town centre on Tuesday (November 25). Police and paramedics were called to the scene following the incident on Haymarket Street, at the junction with Angouleme Way.

The road was closed off by emergency crews following the incident. Police confirmed the car had struck the pedestrian, an elderly man, who was then taken to hospital for treatment.

The nature of his condition has not been confirmed, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The road was closed off for a short while amid the emergency response.

Writing on social media, Bury Council said: “Due to a collision, Haymarket Street at its junction with Angouleme Way is closed. Also closed is Angouleme Way from its junction with Manchester Road. Expect delays and allow extra travel time.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the driver, a man, was later arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs. He was taken into custody to be questioned in connection with the incident.

The road later reopened as a delivery truck collected the vehicle involved. Buses had also been diverted following the collision, which was reported beside the Bury College campus and Bury Interchange.
