Workers and patients have been left fuming by waits of up to 90 minutes to leave a hospital car park. Roadworks have been taking place near the Penrhos Road entrance to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor in recent months.

This is being done by Cyngor Gwynedd to bring in active travel lanes for cyclists and walkers. It has been causing various levels of congestion since starting in April, with work being done over two phases.

But yesterday drivers reported absolute chaos while trying to leave, with many taking over an hour to exit. Some speculated that it could be because the position of the traffic lights for the roadworks had been changed, contributing to the logjam.

One NHS worker, who asked not to be named, said: “Particularly bad last night. I’ve never seen it so bad.”

She said she had left work after a shift in the hospital at 4.30pm but did not exit the car until just before 6pm.

She added: “I usually leave the same time and even with the temporary traffic lights and roadworks I’ve never seen it as bad as that. Almost two hours to get home when it should be a 20 minute journey.”

The worker said the exit again seemed backed up when she arrived for work this morning. She added: “I’ve been told this morning that they have moved the traffic lights closer to the hospital entrance so I’m assuming that’s what it was so if that’s the case it will be like this for a while now.”

Others were left in the same situation yesterday with concerns this will now continue for the coming days or even weeks.

One person said they had taken an hour to leave the car park after an appointment on Wednesday afternoon. They added: “I assumed there had been some sort of incident but I think it was just because of the roadworks.”

When the roadworks first started the Health Board said: “To help avoid delays and ensure that appointments are not missed, all patients and visitors are strongly encouraged to allow extra travel time when coming to the hospital.”

Cyngor Gwynedd and Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board have been contacted for comment.
