Manchester United may look to strengthen some areas of their squad in the January transfer window.
Dorgu alongside Sesko and Mbeumo
Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe believes a new left wing-back could be on the club’s radar in the January transfer window. Last January, the Reds decided to splash the cash to bring Patrick Dorgu to Old Trafford after Ruben Amorim identified the left wing-back role as a position in need of strengthening.
While Dorgu continues to adapt to the Premier League, he has struggled to hold down the position ahead of Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese full-back looks more comfortable on the right but due to Amad’s good form has been moved to the left. With neither man quite doing enough to make the position their own, Adventure Games ambassador Sharpe explained to MEN Sport why he feels this is where the Reds could strengthen.
He said: “It is a difficult one really because I think in the main they are playing pretty well. [Bryan] Mbeumo and [Matheus] Cunha have been fantastic.
“Defensively they have an abundance of defenders. Maybe a left wing-back to help cover Dorgu. He has been up and down in form recently but once he gets up to speed after a couple of injuries and a lack of form, I think he is going to be a really good player.”
United have seen a shift in their recruitment strategy since the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The Ineos founder, of course, is in charge of football operations at Old Trafford and Sharpe feels the jury remains out on the British billionaire.
He added: “You would probably put him [Ratcliffe] in the same category as the manager – I think he has been a little bit indifferent with some of the decisions he has made. Waiting and spending a lot of money bringing Dan Ashworth in and then getting rid of him pretty sharpish, giving [Erik] Ten Hag a new contract and then getting rid of him pretty sharpish. The staff cuts, money cuts, not giving staff tickets for the [FA] Cup final and stuff like that, there are questionable decisions that he has made.
“But again, you have got to see the positives. They have gone out and got Mbeumo, Cunha, [Senne] Lammens. They have strengthened in the areas that they needed to strengthen in. We are creating more chances, playing better football, so things are coming good and you have to say that is partly down to him. As well as making a few mistakes, he has done a few good things as well.”
