The A46 was shut in both directions between junction 18 of the M4, or the Tormarton Interchange, and the A420 at Cold Ashton following the collision.

In an update just before 10am on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), National Highways: South-West said the road was open northbound and both lanes one and two southbound were open too.

The crash was first reported on the AA’s Traffic news map at 4.25am today.

Both Avon & Somerset Police and National Highways traffic officers have been at the scene.

“The A46 northbound is now open between the A420 (Cold Ashton) and the M4 following a collision involving a motorcycle and a car, and lane one is now open southbound,” National Highways: South-West said on X.

“Thanks for your patience.”

National Highways: South West initially said at around 4.45am today the A46 southbound was shut due to the collision between the car and the motorcycle.

It said both Avon & Somerset Police and National Highways traffic officers were at the scene of the crash.

Then at around 5.15am, National Highways: South West said the road was closed in both directions.

Just before 8am, the route remained shut both ways for clear-up and recovery work.

However, in an update at around 8.30am, National Highways: South West said: “Lane two has reopened on the A46 southbound between the M4 and the A420.

“The northbound carriageway remains closed between the A420 (Cold Ashton) and the M4 for recovery and clear-up works following a collision involving a motorcycle and a car.”

National Highways, which manages and improves England’s motorways and major A roads, told the public on its website to ‘expect delays’ following the collision.

“The A46 in South Gloucestershire is closed northbound between the A420 and M4 due to a collision involving a motorcycle and a car,” a spokesperson said.

“Lane one is closed on the southbound carriageway.

“The incident is being led by Avon and Somerset Police, with National Highways traffic officers currently on scene to assist with traffic management and clear-up works.

“Traffic is being diverted via roads in the area.

“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

“Plan ahead – you may wish to reroute or even delay your journey.
