Without a doubt, the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus is one of the most breathtaking locations in the whole city—once named the most beautiful university outside of Oxbridge. Next week (Wednesday, December 3), it’s becoming even more stunning for an extra magical, edition of ‘Christmas on Campus’.
Throughout the day (11am to 8pm), the University of Birmingham isn’t just honouring the festive season, but wrapping up the 125th anniversary celebrations—it was the first ‘red brick’ university to receive a royal charter in 1900. At the heart of the celebrations is a first-of-its-kind lightshow.
From Joseph Chamberlain’s vision for England’s first civic university to world-changing thinkers, dreamers and innovators, animated graphics projected on Aston Webb will bring to life the stories of the University of Birmingham. There will be three showings of this spectacular finale in Chancellor’s Court at 4.15pm, 5pm and 8pm.

The other main highlight of ‘Christmas on Campus’ is the Artisan Market and Christmas Craft Fair, where you can pick up a range of goods from students, Alumni, and staff. Expect everything from handmade ceramics, crocheted creations, stained glass windows, artwork, jewellery, and so much more, alongside street food, too.
We’re particularly excited for the ‘Claus for Thought’ talks, which see fun takes on the festive season from UoB’s brilliant academics, as well as exhibition tours at Aston Webb. Elsewhere, you’ll find live music and entertainment, fairground games, Christmas films, the University Carol Service, and, of course, a Christmas light switch-on.
