‘These tuna were getting really close to the shore. You could hear them when they come up and make these massive splashes – woosh. It’s quite a sight.’
A keen photographer and videographer who has travelled the world to indulge his passion has filmed one of nature’s battles – a tuna feeding frenzy just off the coast of Cornwall.
Jon Vanags has spotted bluefin tuna leaping out of the sea when feeding at Land’s End before. However on this occasion, earlier this month, he had his camera at the ready.
“It was quite intense and exciting to see the tuna in a frenzy like that,” Jon said. “I have been going to this spot low on the rocks past Land’s End. You have to climb down to them a bit. I often go there with a flask of coffee and spend a few hours waiting for the action.
“Morning seems best as it seems to be the time the tuna are the most active. They were feeding on garfish. Seagulls and seals were there too trying to get the scraps.”
he added: “These tuna were getting really close to the shore. You could hear them when they come up and make these massive splashes – woosh. It’s quite a sight.”

Jon who has worked in IT for years on a consultancy basis so he could travel the world for months on end, and has lived in the Midlands, London and Bristol before moving to an rea between Penzance and St Ives, said there is something quite special seeing nature doing its thing and enjoy the rawness of it.
“I’ve not seen anything predating on these tuna,” he said. “We know orca have been spotted in Cornwall’s waters. I’d love to see an orca or a shark attacking tuna, but I guess tuna are large fish and there are many of them.
“Getting that shot of an orca attacking tuna during a frenzy would be quite something.”
