Leeds Women’s Aid has launched its first-ever recipe book, Holding Warmth, created by women who have fled domestic abuse.

Michelin Guide-recognised Leeds chef, Liz Cottam, has provided the book’s introduction, endorsing the project and the therapeutic power of cooking.

Holding Warmth is a collection of recipes and stories contributed by women staying in the charity’s refuge accommodation, demonstrating how food can bring comfort, warmth and connection.

Featuring an array of vibrant snacks, main meals and desserts, Holding Warmth includes several vegetarian and budget friendly options for families. Each recipe is accompanied by a personal anecdote or memory about what the dish means to its contributor.

Nik Peasgood, Chief Executive of Leeds Women’s Aid, said: “We are thrilled to launch Holding Warmth. Our refuge accommodation is home to a remarkable wealth of cultures, knowledge, and lived experience, and this project has brought the women together to highlight the power of sharing food.

“With one in four women experiencing domestic abuse at some point in their lives, we hope the book offers readers a sense of hope and resilience, that it is possible to begin again and rebuild your life.

“Holding Warmth is the perfect stocking filler this Christmas, and all funds raised will help ensure future victim-survivors of abuse can access the support they need.”

Along with the recipes, refuge residents have shaped Holding Warmth by designing and producing the artwork. Messages and quotes from the women are woven throughout to empower readers of the book.

A refuge resident and contributor, said: “Being part of this project has meant so much to me. My children and I are currently in a refuge, and while it’s been a hard journey after experiencing domestic abuse, we’re finally starting to heal. Our voices are being heard and through this recipe, I share not just comfort, but the courage it took to begin again.

“I’m proud to share a meal that brings warmth and connection to our family, and to be part of something that raises awareness and hope for others.”

Leeds Women’s Aid supports nearly 100 women and families in refuge settings each year. All funds raised from Holding Warmth will go towards the running costs of the refuges and Leeds Women’s Aid’s support services across Leeds.

Members of the public can access their copy of Holding Warmth for a suggested donation of £10. Donations and orders can be made online via the Leeds Women’s Aid website, or in person at the Leeds Women’s Aid Horsforth charity shop or various local businesses.
