Dimas Sarmiento: “These experiences strengthen personal relationships and contribute to the overall well-being of our seniors.”
A total of 47 seniors from the municipality, from the centers in El Tablero, San Fernando, and Tunte, recently enjoyed a trip to Madrid organized by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Senior Citizens’ Department. This activity, part of the ‘Active Aging for Seniors’ program, offered a six-day, five-night tour of some of Spain’s most important historical cities.

The trip combined cultural activities, guided tours, and free time. In Madrid, the group visited iconic landmarks such as Plaza de España, Gran Vía, Cibeles, Puerta de Alcalá, Paseo del Prado, and Retiro Park. In the following days, they also visited Cuenca, Segovia, La Granja de San Ildefonso, Toledo, and Guadalajara.
The program included flights, full board accommodation, transfers, a tour guide, lunches en route, and tickets to the planned excursions, including a visit to the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso and attendance at the Houdini musical in Madrid. “The most remarkable aspect of the trip was the joviality, enthusiasm, and friendliness of our seniors, who made every visit, transfer, and stop a demonstration of the good humor and cordiality that we Canarians exude when we leave our homeland,” noted one of the coordinators who accompanied the group.

The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, emphasized that “our senior citizens deserve opportunities to enjoy themselves, learn, and stay active, and the municipal department will maintain its commitment to activities that allow them to share, travel, and have new experiences.” Likewise, the Councilor for Senior Citizens, Dimas Sarmiento, highlighted “the social and community value of these initiatives, which foster community, strengthen personal relationships, and contribute to the overall well-being of our senior citizens.”
These types of proposals seek to improve the quality of life of older people, facilitate their access to cultural activities and promote their autonomy through experiences that encourage physical activity and the strengthening of community ties.
The Senior Citizens’ Department has confirmed that, starting in 2026, the municipality will offer two trips per year, thus expanding the range of cultural and leisure activities aimed at the so-called “second youth”.
