The work appeared outside the Guildhall on the High Street on Saturday (November 29), using grains of rice to depict the difference between the annual allowance for asylum seekers and the profits of asylum seeker accommodation providers.

Each grain of rice represented £2,557, with one grain of rice attributed to the asylum seeker, and a jar full of rice attributed to the accommodation provider.

It comes amid rising tensions surrounding asylum seekers and the Labour government’s announcement that it would empty asylum hotels and possibly use military sites to house them instead.

The piece is the latest in a series by Little Man Speaks, who has placed sculptures on the Elgar statue and near the River Severn.

A previous piece depicted flags being hung on lampposts, which said “I’m not racist but…”. It was later destroyed.
