Using cardboard and sleeping bags for warmth, and whatever clothes they wore, the Scouts recently slept outdoors on campus at Queen Margaret University (QMU) at Musselburgh.

Fifty per cent of the funds raised will go towards Simon Community Scotland, which provides safe places and support for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in Scotland.

The sleep-out will also help cover the cost of a trip by 1st Musselburgh Scouts to an international camp, Poachers Jamboree, at Lincoln next year.

Taking part in the sleep-out were 17 Scouts, boys and girls aged 10-14, accompanied by four adults, who smashed their fundraising target of £450.

Scout leader Richard Maltman said: “With fantastic support from Queen Margaret University, 1st Musselburgh Scouts completed their experience of sleeping rough.

“The weather was not too good, with a mix of rain, cold and wind.

“So far, the Scouts have raised £1,825, which we are very proud of. The Scouts would also like to thank DW Cases, from Inveresk Mills Industrial Park, Station Road, who were kind enough to supply a lot of large cardboard sheets to help construct some of the sleeping pods.

“The Scouts built their own cardboard shelters and slept overnight, which was uncomfortable, cold, wet and difficult.

“It was humbling for the Scouts and leaders to realise that people slept like this every night, often through not fault of their own.

“Feedback from the Scouts showed that, despite being seasoned campers, it was still a very challenging night – some Scouts managing to get some sleep, some less so.

“As an experience, the Scouts will talk about this at school and home for a long time, helping to bring awareness to the plight of many people forced to live on our streets.

“The Scouts would like to thank the many people that have donated money so far to our two fundraising areas – Simon Community Scotland and the Poachers Jamboree in 2026.”

There is still time to support the Scouts, as Mr Maltman said: “The more money we can raise, the more Simon Community can help where it matters most.”
