In April, Prada agreed to acquire Versace from US-based Capri Holdings Ltd. for approximately €1.25 billion ($1.45 billion), the largest acquisition in the Prada Group’s 112-year history. Capri Holdings had itself acquired Versace for $1.8 billion (€1.55 billion) in 2018.
The Versace brand brings a distinct aesthetic to Prada’s portfolio and lays the groundwork for the creation of a larger Italian player, potentially better positioned to compete more effectively with rival luxury groups globally.
The Prada Group owns some of the most prestigious brands in the luxury sector, including Prada and Miu Miu, alongside Church’s, Car Shoe, Versace, Marchesi 1824, and Luna Rossa. The clothing, leather goods, footwear, and jewellery collections designed, produced, and distributed by the Milan-based company are available in more than 70 countries through a network of 620 company-owned stores, its direct e-commerce channel, as well as selected e-tailers and department stores worldwide. The group, which also operates in eyewear and beauty through licensing agreements, has 25 factories and 15,529 employees worldwide (as of June 30, 2025, excluding Versace).
The completion of the deal thus confirms the remarks recently made by Prada Group CEO Andrea Guerra during FashionNetwork.com’s visit to the company’s flagship facility in Scandicci, in the Metropolitan City of Florence. Meanwhile, Lorenzo Bertelli, 37, the eldest son of fashion designer Miuccia Prada and industrialist Patrizio Bertelli, the two driving forces behind the prestigious Italian group, can now begin his new role as executive chairman of Versace, which the company had indicated would commence once the Versace-Prada deal was finalised. Alongside the managerial shift, the maison’s creative helm has passed to Dario Vitale (formerly of Miu Miu), who unveiled his first collection last September in Milan during Milan Women’s Fashion Week.
