A man who was “unlawfully at large” after going missing during day release while serving a life sentence for murder has been extradited back to Northern Ireland.

Police said the 56-year-old man was extradited from the Republic on Tuesday.

He is due to appear in court later today.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have today, Tuesday, 2nd December, extradited a 56-year-old man from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland.

“The man, who had been serving a life sentence in prison following a murder conviction in 2009, was reported as being unlawfully at large in December 2024 after being on day-release and failing to return.
