They also adorned the town’s iconic archer sculpture, on the banks of the River Esk, with an orange and purple hat and scarf, designed by secretary Pat Kane, to highlight the initiative.
Inner Wheel is backing the ‘Orange the World’ campaign, which takes place annually, starting on November 25 – International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – and ending on December 10, Human Rights Day.
“Purple is the colour in support of gender equality, which is one key to the prevention of gender-based violence,” said a club spokesperson.
“Violence against women and girls remains the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violation in the world.
“In the UK, violence against women and girls is happening at all levels and in all areas of our society.
“Primary prevention is a core objective of the Scottish Government and Convention of Local Authorities (COSLA ) for preventing violence against women and girls.
“Primary prevention aims to stop this violence before it occurs by tackling the root cause, which is gender inequality.
“Evidence shows there are lower levels of violence against women and girls in societies where women’s participation is valued and where there are fewer social economic and political inequalities between men and women.
“Members of the Inner Wheel club of Musselburgh support not only the UN awareness campaign but also the prevention strategy by personally avoiding gender stereotyping, having zero tolerance for sexual harassment when it is encountered, and modelling and encouraging healthy relationships with mutual respect between the sexes.”
