Cinema in the City returns this weekend with a series of film screenings at The Old Schoolhouse Community Project in Huyton. The three-day event, aimed at all ages, celebrates “the power of stories to bring people closer together,” and is being hosted by FACT and Heart of Glass.

The weekend will kick off on Friday evening with Greta Gerwig’s star-studded adaptation of Little Women (2019), and Saturday evening will see Liverpool actor Stephen Graham starring in Boiling Point (2021).

Matinées will be shown on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with animated family favourites Migration (2023) and Happy Feet (2006) sure to attract a full house.

The schedule will conclude on Sunday evening with the Palme D’Or-winning Shoplifters (2018), which follows the lives of a Tokyo family reliant on shoplifting to survive a life of poverty.

Tickets are on sale via the FACT website, at a more affordable price than a typical entry for one of the major cinema chains. Adults (16+) can catch a screening for £6, while a child’s ticket (aged two to 15) is priced at £3. Babies and CEA Card holders go free, and L36 residents are eligible for a half-price reduction. Tickets will be available on the door but the organisers encourage buying in advance to avoid disappointment.

The event in Huyton is the latest iteration of Cinema in the City, a programme coordinated by FACT which has previously held screenings in unlikely Liverpool locations such as the Cotton Exchange and Ullet Road Church.

This time, FACT is teaming up with Heart of Glass, a community arts organisation based in Liverpool that originally started in St Helens, known for its history as an important hub for glass production.

The organisation’s mission is to unite people through art, giving underrepresented communities a voice with which to express their own creativity.
