Matt O’Riley is proving to be another success story since leaving Celtic.

Over the years, Celtic have proven that they can pluck out some of the best talents, unknown figures, for little money, and then transform them into gems.

Virgil van Dijk is a prime example, but after O’Riley’s Treble-winning success at Celtic, he has continued to rise in European football.

Celtic sold O’Riley to Brighton and Hove Albion for £26 million last summer, and despite an injury-hit campaign, he still caught the eye of Marseille.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on Celtic hero Matt O’Riley at Marseille

There are suggestions that Marseille want to purchase O’Riley, after loaning the Denmark international for the 2025/26 season, where they are also competing in the Champions League.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler was asked about O’Riley’s transfer situation in his pre-match press conference ahead of Aston Villa’s visit on Wednesday night.

The Premier League’s youngest boss, who is 32, told the media that Brighton are ‘observing the situation’ with O’Riley, but he didn’t rule anything out.

Celtic hold a 10% sell-on clause if O’Riley is sold, so the Hoops could be in for a few quid if he does move to the Ligue 1 giants permanently.

“He is definitely a Brighton player,” said Hurzeler.

“He has a contract here, so we will observe the situation and then, when the time for these kinds of decisions has to be made, we will make the right decision, that’s for sure.”
