What makes a neighbourhood truly “cool” is up for debate, but it is widely agreed that unique, independent shops, as well as hip bars and cafes, help raise these areas above the rest.

The “prosperous” and trendy neighbourhood of Stockbridge in Edinburgh is widely regarded as one of, if not the coolest, area in Scotland.
Stockbridge, which is a 10-minute walk from Princes Street in the centre of the Scottish capital, is lovingly called “the village” by those who live here.
It is well-known for its great variety of independent shops, bars and cafes, something that was praised when it was recognised as one of the coolest UK areas by The Telegraph last year.
Discussing the location, the publication said: “Compact and prosperous, it’s blessed with independent shops, bars and cafés both old and new, and a thriving Sunday market.

“It also has the best charity shops in the city, good vintage outfits, and no less than three independent bookshops, including one dedicated to women writers.
“And proving everything old is new again, there’s Mr Purves’ Lighting Emporium for sales, spares and repairs of vintage lighting – particularly useful given we may all want oil lamps this winter.”
One of Stockbridge’s most famous streets is Circus Lane, a small, winding road walled in by quaint, almost hamlet-like homes.
The lane was built in the early 19th century as a residential district for the city’s wealthiest inhabitants.

Stockbridge is also relatively close to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum of Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland.
For students, the University of Edinburgh isn’t too far away either, making it the perfect base for those studying at the nearby campus.
